SC notice on plea over targeted eviction of Bengali Muslims in Assam

The Supreme Court on Monday issued a notice to the Assam Government on a petition alleging that Bengali-speaking Muslims were selectively targeted in an eviction drive conducted in a forested area near the Assam-Nagaland border.

The plea, filed by residents of the affected area, contends that the eviction was carried out in ‘hot haste’, rendering many families homeless and forcing them to take shelter in the open or with relatives. The petitioners claimed they are Indian citizens who were displaced under the pretext that the land fell within the Rengma Reserve Forest under the Assam Forest Regulation, 1891.
