Phad Painting: The vibrant storytelling art of Rajasthan

Phad painting, one of Rajasthan's most distinctive folk art forms, traces its roots to the Mewar region in the 17th century.

Unlike conventional paintings meant purely for display, Phad paintings were created as visual narratives, serving as portable storyboards for itinerant storytellers. These long, colorful scrolls were used by Bhopas, traditional priest-singers, to depict the exploits of local deities, folk heroes, and legendary figures, bringing epic tales to life for village audiences.
The art form evolved as a synthesis of devotion, entertainment, and community engagement. Bhopas would carry these painted scrolls from village to village, unrolling them as they sang ballads and recounted tales. This dynamic interplay between narrative and visual art helped the community retain collective memory, ensuring that stories of courage, virtue, and divine intervention were passed down through generations.
