UNDERSTANDING JOINT PAIN

Joint pain can arise from numerous causes. The most common include arthritis, injuries, inflammation, infections, and underlying medical conditions.

Arthritis: This is the leading cause of joint pain. Osteoarthritis, resulting from wear and tear, affects millions worldwide, especially older adults. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system attacks joint tissues, causing inflammation and pain.

Injuries: Trauma such as sprains, fractures, or dislocations can cause joint pain. Overuse or repetitive strain injuries, common in athletes and manual workers, also contribute.

Inflammation: Conditions like bursitis (inflammation of bursae) and tendinitis (inflammation of tendons) can cause localized joint discomfort.

Infections: Infections within the joint, though less common, require immediate medical attention.

Other Causes: Diseases such as gout, lupus, and fibromyalgia can manifest with joint pain.

SYMPTOMS OF JOINT PAIN

Common signs include:

Aching or soreness in the joint

Swelling and tenderness

Stiffness, particularly in the morning or after rest

Reduced flexibility or range of motion

Warmth or redness around the joint

Severe symptoms such as sudden swelling, intense pain, fever, or joint deformity warrant urgent medical evaluation.
