Mamata’s night-out remark sparks fury after Durgapur rape

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday sparked a political uproar after advising colleges not to allow female students to go out at night, in the wake of the alleged gangrape of a second-year medical student in Durgapur.
"I'm shocked to see the incident, but private medical colleges also should take care of their students, and especially girls. The girls should not be allowed to go outside at night. They have to protect themselves also," Banerjee said, adding that police had launched an extensive search in the area, which she described as a "forest zone."
The Chief Minister condemned the assault, assuring that strict action would be taken against the culprits. "Nobody will be excused.
