Indian PM Commences His Journey to China via Japan: Is an Era of Asian Leadership Possible?
The Daily Guardian
|August 30, 2025
Relations between the two nations became stagnant following a fatal confrontation in Galwan Valley in 2020; however, they began to improve when Modi and Xi met face-to-face for the first time in four years during a BRICS summit in Russia in October of the last year.
In light of the 50% tariff imposed on India by Trump, it appears that this is an opportune moment for geopolitical realignments, as the Indian Prime Minister has commenced his journey to China after a long interval of seven years, passing through Japan. He has been warmly welcomed in Japan by the Japanese Prime Minister, officials, and the general populace. Japanese women, adorned in Indian attire, recited the Gayatri Mantra and performed a Rajasthani welcome song in honour of the Indian PM. A comprehensive range of prioritized agenda items has been unveiled by the Prime Ministers of both nations, encompassing investment, technological collaboration, AI, chip manufacturing, and cooperation in green and clean energy.
The Indian PM remarked that while Japan serves as a "tech powerhouse", India represents a "talent powerhouse", and the two nations must unite to elevate the Asian century in global politics to the forefront. The profound trust and civilizational connections are well-reflected in the special strategic partnership between India and Japan. Also, the Indian PM is scheduled to visit China and participate in the SCO summit.
While I am writing this column, Indian PM is in Japan to participate in the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit taking place in Tokyo. This visit is made at the invitation of Japanese PM Shigeru Ishiba. Throughout the summit, both leaders will assess the full range of bilateral relations and explore methods to advance the next stage of the 'Special Strategic and Global Partnership', which has been steadily developing over the last 11 years.
A number of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) are expected to be signed, concentrating on enhancing collaboration in crucial sectors such as defence and security, trade and economy, as well as technology and innovation.
