INDIA INVESTS RS 3760 CR IN BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE

Government announced a major investment in the nation's renewable energy sector, committing Rs 3,760 crore (approximately $500 million) in viability gap funding for the establishment of a 4,000 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). The funding will cover up to 40% of the project's total capital costs and will be disbursed in five instalments through 2030-31.

Union Minister Anurag Thakur, speaking at a press briefing, said that the central government would entirely bear the costs of the viability gap funding. This investment is expected to attract an additional Rs 9,500 crore (about $1.27 billion) in private capital, driving the overall funding for the scheme to nearly Rs 13,260 crore ($1.77 billion).
