India announces railway links to Bhutan to counter China

India has announced plans to build the first-ever railway links to Bhutan in a landmark move aimed at deepening ties with the Himalayan kingdom and countering China's growing influence in the region.
The two proposed corridors—a 20-kilometre line from Banarhat in West Bengal to Samtse in southwest ern Bhutan, and a 69-kilometre link from Kokrajhar in Assam to Gelephu in southern Bhutan—will be constructed at an estimated cost of 4,033 crore, fully funded by India. The expenditure will be shared between the Ministry of Railways and the Ministry of External Affairs, with a significant portion drawn from India's 10,000-crore development assistance to Bhutan under its 13th FiveYear Plan (2024-2029).
