Guard your memory: Everyday habits that help prevent dementia

The most common type is Alzheimer's disease, followed by vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal dementia. Although dementia primarily affects older adults, it is not a normal part of aging. While there is currently no cure for most forms of dementia, growing research suggests that certain lifestyle changes can help reduce the risk or delay its onset. This article explores what dementia is, its risk factors, and science-backed strategies for prevention.

WHAT IS DEMENTIA?

Dementia results from damage to brain cells that interferes with their ability to communicate with each other. This disruption affects thinking, behavior, and feelings. Common symptoms include:

• Memory loss that disrupts daily life

• Difficulty planning or solving problems

• Confusion with time or place

• Trouble understanding visual images or spatial relationships

• Changes in mood, personality, or social withdrawal

The symptoms and progression of dementia vary depending on the type and severity. While aging is the biggest risk factor, dementia is not inevitable. Many people live into old age without experiencing cognitive decline.

RISK FACTORS FOR DEMENTIA

There are both non-modifiable and modifiable risk factors associated with dementia:

Non-Modifiable Risk Factors:

• Age: Risk increases significantly after age 65.

• Genetics: Family history and certain genes (like APOE 4) may increase risk.

• Gender: Women are more likely to develop Alzheimer's disease than men.

Modifiable Risk Factors:

• Heart health: High blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes can increase the risk.
