Beauty sleep: How sleep affects skin and hormones

“Get your beauty sleep” may sound like an old wives’ tale, but science increasingly supports the idea that quality sleep is essential not only for overall health but also for glowing skin and balanced hormones.

While expensive creams and serums can enhance appearance, true beauty often begins with what happens while we sleep.

During sleep, the body enters repair mode. Blood flow to the skin increases, collagen production is boosted, and damaged cells are repaired. This overnight regeneration helps maintain skin elasticity and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Conversely, inadequate sleep can disrupt these processes. Sleep deprivation increases levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, which breaks down collagen and accelerates skin ageing. Lack of sleep is also associated with dull complexion, puffiness, dark circles and increased skin sensitivity.

Studies have shown that people who consistently get seven to nine hours of quality sleep tend to have healthier skin barriers, better hydration and a more youthful appearance.
