In a Goa often reduced to beach shacks, club posters, Land short-stay tourism, the most enduring music of the season can come from a village mand—the open space where women gather after dusk to sing, clap, and move in two facing rows.

Dhaalo (also spelled Dhalo) is a ritual folk tradition performed largely by women during the Hindu month of Paush (December-January). It marks winter and the harvest season, and it functions as a community prayer for protection and well-being.

Dhaalo is not “stage culture.” It is participatory and rule-bound: a group of women—often 12 to 24—forms two parallel lines facing each other, interlocking arms while keeping time with footwork and claps. The pace is measured rather than showy. The songs, usually in Konkani (and sometimes Marathi), move between devotion and social memory: invocations, fragments of local histories, humor about everyday life, and verses that shift with each night's mood.
