Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus has been sentenced to six months in jail by a labour court in Bangladesh's capital for violating the country's labour laws.

Yunus, known for pioneering microcredit to assist impoverished individuals, was present in court and granted bail, with the defence given 30 days to appeal.
The trial revolves around Grameen Telecom, a nonprofit founded by Yunus, and the court found violations such as failure to make certain employees permanent, absence of employees' participation and welfare funds, and non-distribution of dividends to staff as per company policy.
