Arsenic, fluoride beyond permissible limits in groundwater in most states, LS informed

The groundwater in most parts of the country has been found contaminated, as studies by the Central Ground Water Board indicate the occurrence of arsenic and fluoride in groundwater beyond permissible limits for human consumption in isolated pockets in various states and union territories of the country.
This was revealed in a written reply by the Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti, Raj Bhushan Choudhary, in the Lok Sabha. According to the reply, arsenic has been reported in parts of 230 districts in 25 states, and fluoride contamination has been found in parts of 469 districts in 27 states.
The contamination, mostly geogenic in nature, originates from soil and rock matrices.
