POLICE are warning nature-lovers to be responsible when watching marine wildlife.

People are urged to be wise when watching wildlife

There has been an increase in whale sightings off the coast, with Devon and Cornwall Police saying it has received reports of people disturbing them to get a closer look.

Officers said people should keep at least 100m (328ft) away from whales and other marine wildlife, avoiding mothers and calves completely, and never pursuing animals if they move away.

The Rural Affairs team at Devon and Cornwall Police is teaming up with the Marine Management Organisation to raise awareness of the importance of watching wildlife responsibly.

"Earlier this year Cornwall's coastline became a hotspot for whale-watching, with multiple reports of humpback whales in the area, said rural affairs officer PC Lee Skinner.

"However, with the arrival of these rare marine mammals comes an increased responsibility to protect them from disturbance which can negatively impact their health and behaviour patterns.

"As part of Operation Seabird - a national initiative which aims to tackle marine wildlife disturbance, antisocial behaviour and promote responsible wildlife watching - officers are reminding people visiting coastal areas or using boats on the water to follow safe wildlife-watching practices to ensure the safety of both the whales and themselves.

"Cornwall is fortunate to have a spectacular coastline which is home to many species of marine animals and wildlife.
