Andla Mthembu is correct that South Africa should have and needs to take the initiative when it comes to shoring up our trade relations (The Citizen, 10 July) after the tariff blow by Donald Trump, pictured.
We need to ensure that we don't put all our eggs in one basket and pursue profitable trade relations with as many partners as possible.
As a developing country, a policy of free trade opens our markets up to goods that benefit our consumers, while opening up foreign markets to our exports.
