Leader throws money at ageing population, birth rate

Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic yesterday unveiled €685 million (about R12.7 billion) worth of measures aimed at combating the country's ageing population, low birth rates and a worrying exodus.

Experts repeatedly warn the European Union member nation of 3.8 million people is facing a demographic collapse while the workforce is also shrinking.
"Figures show that the situation requires decisive measures that will boost birth rates and enable the return of our emigrants," Plenkovic said when presenting the measures.
"The aim is that the issue becomes a strategic one."
The large majority of the measures, to be implemented from March next year, is aimed at helping parents.
