Insurance that covers you in event of kidnapping

Kidnappings for ransom and extortion are increasing worldwide - and South Africa is no exception.

According to the South African Police Service's (Saps) statistics for the third quarter of the 2024-25 financial year, 4748 cases occurred between October and December last year -an increase of 171 from 4577 recorded in 2023.

Kidnappings increased to 17 061 in 2023-24, with Gauteng leading with the most cases.

Ryno de Kock, the head of distribution insure at PSG, said kidnappers usually target individuals for financial gain.

Children, wealthy individuals, executives and tourists were particularly at risk.

Businesses can also be targeted as part of extortion or intimidation tactics. He said kidnappers often target children of business leaders or high-net-worth individuals.
