Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) considerations have increasingly become strategic imperatives for companies worldwide. SA, with its unique economic, regulatory, and socio-political dynamics, has taken significant strides in ESG adoption. However, how does it compare to other nations?
This article unpacks SA's ESG positioning in comparison to global peers, drawing from the 2025 21st Century GECN Global Climate Report.
ESG incentives and executive compensation
Globally, ESG metrics are becoming central to executive compensation structures. In SA, 62% of companies integrate environmental measures into their Long-Term Incentive (LTI) plans, making it one of the leading regions, alongside Europe (68%) and the UK (56%). In contrast, US companies lag significantly, with only 10% incorporating environmental incentives.
