Trump called South Africa one of the worst offenders and ranks it with China at 34%, Vietnam and Cambodia at 46% and 49%. Lesotho was hit with a 50% duty.
Yet tariffs on US imports into South Africa are not 60% as Trump claimed and hover roughly around 25% when including VAT. Only poultry carries a 62% duty.
Editor of the Yale Review James Surowiecki suggested on X that Trump instead halved all trade deficits to get to his numbers. He illustrated his speculation on tariffs imposed on Indonesia.
Using 2024 trade figures, the US imported $14.7 billion worth of goods from South Africa and exported $5.8 billion, leaving a trade deficit of $8.9 billion.
