SMISO CELE: RECLAIMS THE CITY'S HIDDEN HISTORIES

- Citizen reporter

From township to gallery

Simiso Cele, born on 11 February 2002, is a Joburg-based visual artist who recently completed his BA honours degree in visual arts at the University of Johannesburg. Central to his practice is an exploration of the enmeshment between ecology and geopolitics.

Project outline My practice has always been about making connections between disparate elements, often those concerned with the shifting of equalities and ecology.

I explore and track how equalities shift in relation to space upon its reconfiguration. I arrive at this using "Immediacies of Encounter" - a mode of work that calls for me to tend to my curiosities beyond the personal, while carrying it along in the process of thinking and making.
