SPLIT LOOMS: 'ROGUE' COALITION PARTNERS MOVE TO OUST MAYOR
The ANC in Johannesburg is threatening to cut off some coalition partners it accuses of going rogue.
This is after the partners "threatened" mayor Dada Morero with a motion of no confidence.
A group of parties describing themselves as the Minority Governing Parties (MGP) said on Tuesday they had submitted the motion against Morero.
The group comprises Al Jama-ah, African Heart Congress, United Democratic Movement and African Transformation Movement. The motion is expected to be debated in council in November.
Council speaker Margaret Arnolds said the motion had not been lodged. This was confirmed by the ANC and Good party, who are both part of the government of local unity coalition (GLU).
Yesterday, ANC regional secretary Sasa Manganye said the ANC felt disrespected by the MGP.
"They cannot threaten the mayor whenever they feel like it. That is not how you deal with your coalition partners," he said.
He described the parties as "rogue".
"We are not happy with this kind of conduct. We do not remove a mayor of the ANC through a motion of no confidence.
"When Thapelo Amad was mayor, we never placed a motion of no confidence in him; the same as with Kabelo Gwamanda.
"We have treated them like coalition partners and we expect the same respect from them," he said.
Manganye said the group are destabilising the municipality.
