CAMPAIGNERS CALL FOR RESTORATION OF 'GHOST WOODS' FELLED AND REPLACED BY PLANTATIONS
-
PEOPLE think England has significantly more ancient woodland than it has, according to surveying that suggests people underestimate nature's decline.
Polling of more than 1,000 people across the UK found just 12% knew less than 5% of England was covered in native ancient woodland, a habitat which campaigners say is found over just 1.6% of the country.
The majority of respondents were surprised, angry and concerned to discover the small fraction of England covered in ancient woodlands, and nearly 60% said the Government and public bodies should do more to protect wildlife in the habitat.
