Reay call to kick on with strong start
The Chronicle
|September 08, 2025
AFTER a dominant 4-0 victory over Sheffield United to kick off their Barclays Women's Super League 2 campaign, Sunderland AFC Women’s head coach Mel Reay shared her thoughts on the team’s performance.
-
Admitting the first 30 minutes were a little slow as the players found their rhythm against a tough opponent, Reay praised how the team grew in confidence as the match progressed.
“The opening half hour wasn’t quite where we wanted to be,” she explained on safc.com. “We were a bit tentative, feeling each other out, which is understandable given it’s the start of a new season and we have some new players settling in. But once we found our feet, the players really started to express themselves and we became much more clinical in front of goal.”
Reay was particularly impressed with how the new signings - Hannah Greenwood, Grace Moloney, Rhiannon Roberts and Izzy Atkinson - fitted seamlessly into the squad, making strong competitive debuts.
