Not just a question of sport

IT’S a strange event if you think about it, Sports Personality.

For a start, there's the very idea that it honours a “personality”.

What exactly should we take that to mean? Is it different from a plain old “sportsperson”?

Is it suggesting the sporting achievements of the contenders aren’t the only thing we should consider when deciding who to vote for, assuming we can be bothered to vote for anyone at all?

Is it saying someone's all-round “personality” should also be taken into account?

If so, what if that person doesn’t seem to have one? Let's be honest, over the years, a fair few sportspeople haven't.
