Hospital to close its dementia care ward

A NORTH East hospital trust has confirmed plans to shut a dementia care ward are to go ahead.
Following a formal consultation period at the Gateshead Health NHS Trust bosses confirmed ward 23 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital will be closed.
This is one of the hospital’s wards for older people. Hospital bosses have said they are looking to address concerns which have been raised.
The move comes amid huge financial pressures. The trust's financial plan for the current financial year includes a requirement for £32.8m in cost-saving measures, similar to those seen across the region’s NHS, including in Newcas-
tle where savings of £9m a month are needed.
