GATESHEAD manager Alun Armstrong admits he will have to take a patient approach with the fitness of Jacob Butterfield ahead of tomorrow’s home game with FC Halifax Town.

Heed manager is having to hold Butterfield back

The Heed player-assistant manager made his long-awaited comeback from a serious knee injury when he started Wednesday night's National League Cup defeat to Middlesbrough Under-21s.

The experienced _ midfielder played for 65 minutes at the International Stadium and could be in contention for a start tomorrow, but Armstrong can’t rush experienced Butterfield back into consistent action.

He said: “I have to be really patient with him and I am watching him thinking how much we need him in there.

“But we can’t just rely on just him, we know he is a top-class player but we have to remember he has been out eight or nine months so it will take time.
