NEWCASTLE WINGER SETS HIS SIGHTS ON AMERICA 2026

- By MATTHEW ABBOTT

ANTHONY Gordon admits he needs to perform for Newcastle United for the rest of this season to secure a place in the England squad for next summer's World Cup.

Gordon opened the scoring against Latvia in Riga on Tuesday night as the Three Lions qualified for next summer’s tournament.

The goal was just his second for England - and a first since Thomas Tuchel took over from Lee Carsley this year.

He did not start a competitive match under the current head coach until this autumn. However, the Toon forward has now done so in each of their last three games.

And Gordon states that those have also been his three best performances across 16 caps for the country. “I think definitely the last three performances have been my best for England,” Gordon told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“And I think they've got progressively better.

“But, yet again, I can’t rest on that. I still feel I can do more. I still feel like I could have scored two goals and got an assist or two.
