PLANNING PERMISSION

The first step is to check whether your loft conversion requires planning permission, underlines Costel.

Hip to gable conversions: May be permitted if height and volume restrictions are met. Planning permission is required if...

"The property is in a conservation area. Your home is listed or in the curtilage of a listed building.

"Your builder or architect can advise," says Costel. "But it's also worth checking your local council's planning section online."

He says useful resources include...

The Planning Portal: A national guide to planning permissions and permitted development.
