Drone warning after 371% increase in unauthorised flights

A WARNING has been issued to people with drones after a major rise in unauthorised flights around Newcastle International Airport.

In 2025 so far, 165 flights have been recorded in Newcastle's Flight Restriction Zone (FRZ), an increase of 371% on the previous year, with only 35 of these flights in the entirety of 2024.
This rise brings a huge safety concern for the airport, with staff working alongside Northumbria Police to make people aware of the FRZ, and how they can ensure that they are flying their drones safely. The FRZ covers a 5km radius around the airport, encompassing areas such as Ponteland, Darras Hall, Westerhope, Great Park, and some parts of Kenton and Gosforth.
