Al-driven 3D heart scans used to tackle coronary heart disease in our region

A NEWCASTLE team have been using Al-driven technology to create 3D images of a patient's heart and help diagnose coronary heart disease.

The Newcastle Hospitals NHS Trust - which runs the Freeman and the Royal Victoria Infirmary - has been at the forefront of a national study which has seen technology called Heartflow used to turn a CT scan of someone's heart into a 3D image. The technology helps diagnose coronary heart disease and does so by reducing the need for invasive angiograms.

The technology creates a 3D scan that can assess the extent and location of any blockages in the arteries supplying blood to the heart.

The result is then analysed by a cardiologist - and it can even help suggest the size and position of a stent which could be fitted to resolve the issue.
