Ahead of the upcoming general elections in India, the Misinformation Combat Alliance (MCA) has announced the launch of a Deepfakes Analysis Unit (DAU) tipline on March 25.

WhatsApp tipline launched to fight deepfakes in India

This initiative aims to assist in detecting and responding to AI-generated synthetic media, particularly amidst concerns about misinformation and AI deceptions surrounding the electoral process.

Scheduled to commence on April 19 and to be conducted in seven phases, the general elections have prompted increased efforts to safeguard election integrity, particularly against the spread of deepfakes and AI-generated misinformation.

The newly launched WhatsApp tipline, a collaboration between MCA and Meta, allows members of the public to forward audio notes and videos to +91 9999025044 on WhatsApp for assessments on whether the media contains AI-generated elements.

The tipline will operate in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu to cater to a wide audience.

Meta's collaboration with industry stakeholders, including the MCA, reflects efforts to strengthen the fact-checking ecosystem and combat the dissemination of AI-generated misinformation.
