US HOLDS CRUCIAL TALKS WITH TALIBAN TO DISCUSS AFGHAN CRISIS

As per the State Department, a group of senior American diplomats met representatives from the Taliban and technocratic professionals during which they talked about the critical issues concerning Afghanistan’s well-being and humanitarian crisis. The meeting took place in Doha on 30 July 2023 and 31 July 2023.

The US delegation was led by Thomas West, Special Representative for Afghanistan, along with Rina Amiri, Special Envoy for Afghan Women, Girls, and Human Rights, and Karen Decker, Chief of the US Mission to Afghanistan.

The meeting was focused on important issues concerning Afghanistan’s well-being and humanitarian crisis, and the US delegation strongly emphasised the need to build mutual confidence and trust to support the Afghan people.

In the meeting, deep concerns about the ongoing humanitarian situation were expressed, and a commitment to supporting aid facilities and United Nations bodies in delivering humanitarian assistance on the basis of ethical principles was reaffirmed.

The US officials also raised urgent concerns regarding the degrading human rights situation, particularly the rights of girls, women, and vulnerable communities. They urged the Taliban to reverse policies relating to detentions, religious practices, and media restrictions, with a strong focus on upholding human rights.
