Supreme Court awaits Maharashtra's response on Pradeep Sharma's bail plea

Former Mumbai Police officer Pradeep Sharma received temporary relief from the Supreme Court on Monday, allowing him to avoid surrendering until further orders regarding the life sentence he faces in a 2006 fake encounter killing case.

The court also sought a response from the Maharashtra government concerning Sharma's bail plea in the case.
Sharma, a prominent figure in Mumbai's police force during the 1990s and 2000s," was part of a notorious squad known for targeting the city's underworld figures. He, along with other officers, was convicted in the 2006 killing of Ramnarayan Gupta, an alleged associate of gangster Chhota Rajan.
The Supreme Court admitted Sharma's appeal against the Bombay High Court's decision, which sentenced him to life imprisonment. The High Court upheld convictions for 13 other accused, mostly former policemen, emphasizing that law enforcement personnel must not abuse their authority.
