SNORING AND SLEEP HEALTH: CAUSES, SYMPTOMS, AND NATURAL CARE

Snoring is a common sleep-related condition that occurs when air flows through a partially narrowed airway during sleep.

OPEN UPPER AIRWAY CLOSED UPPER AIRWAY
As the muscles in the throat relax, the airway becomes tighter, and the movement of air causes the soft tissues in the throat, palate, and tongue to vibrate. This vibration produces the familiar snoring sound. Snoring can vary from mild and occasional to loud and chronic, often influenced by sleep position, nasal congestion, alcohol consumption, or excess weight.
WHAT IS SLEEP APNEA?
Sleep apnea, especially obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), is a more serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. This happens when the airway becomes partially or completely blocked for short periods, often lasting several seconds. These interruptions reduce oxygen levels in the body and disturb normal sleep cycles, even if the person is not fully aware of waking up.
KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SNORING AND SLEEP APNEA
The main difference is that snoring involves sound caused by vibrating tissues, while sleep apnea involves actual pauses in breathing. In simple snoring, airflow continues even though it is noisy. In sleep apnea, airflow is reduced or completely blocked for short periods, which can lead to drops in oxygen levels and disrupted sleep.
Another important difference is the health impact. Snoring is often harmless, although it can disturb sleep quality. Sleep apnea, however, can lead to serious health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke risk, and extreme daytime fatigue if left untreated.
