FROM SHADOWS TO SPOTLIGHT

For decades, female characters were confined to the background— portrayed as submissive wives, sacrificial mothers, or mere eye candy. These depictions reinforced regressive stereotypes, limiting the representation of women to supporting roles in male-driven narratives. However, in recent years, female characters have stepped into the spotlight, leading powerful, authentic, and complex stories.

FROM SHADOWS TO SPOTLIGHT

Indian cinema has long been a mirror reflecting the nation's evolving societal norms, cultural values, and the intricate tapestry of its people's lives. Over the decades, the portrayal of women in Indian films has undergone a significant transformation—from traditional, often restrictive roles to more empowered and nuanced representations. This evolution not only mirrors the changing status of women in society but also catalyzes further discourse on gender equality and women's rights.

One of the most recent films that has sparked conversations about women's roles and societal expectations is Mrs, starring Sanya Malhotra and directed by Arati Kadav. The film delves into the life of a young woman who begins to question the traditional customs imposed upon her, particularly the ritual of Karwa Chauth—a day when married Hindu women fast from sunrise to moonrise for the well-being and longevity of their husbands.

Director Arati Kadav has openly expressed her reservations about how Bollywood has historically glorified Karwa Chauth, often portraying it as the epitome of a wife's devotion. In Mrs, this ritual becomes a focal point for examining the broader implications of such traditions on women's autonomy. The protagonist's journey reflects a growing awareness and resistance against societal norms that have long dictated women's behaviours and choices.

Through the narrative, Mrs challenges the audience to reflect on the relevance of age-old customs in contemporary society and encourages women to make choices that align with their personal beliefs rather than succumbing to societal pressures.
