Centre extends import duty exemption on masur dal to March 2025

In response to persistent concerns about high inflation rates, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) issued an order on December 22, extending the exemption for masur dal by an additional year.

This exemption, initially effective from October 2021, will now last until March 31, 2025, providing relief beyond the previous deadline of March 31, 2024.

India has been grappling with surging food inflation, reaching 8.7 percent in November, up from 6.61 percent in October. Of particular note, the inflation rate for pulses was recorded at a significant 20 percent in November, according to data from the Statistics Ministry.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the government has been implementing measures to mitigate the impact. One such initiative includes the extension of the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, a free grain distribution program, by five years until 2028. This program aims to provide 5 kg of grains monthly to impoverished households.
