Etienne Hugo, director of distribution services at the water and sanitation directorate, outlines ongoing sewer and pump station upgrades supporting the restoration of the Milnerton Lagoon at a public meeting in Milnerton.
“We are beginning to see the results of our investments. Fewer blockages and reduced odours are just some of the benefits. These interventions are building a more resilient system for the long term,” he said.
The lagoon has long faced pollution challenges, with residents and environmental groups raising concerns about its condition.
City data now indicates a shift, with sewer blockages in the catchment dropping from 4 270 in October 2024 to 3 489 by February 2026.
Officials say preventative maintenance, pipe rehabilitation, and system upgrades are helping to reduce failures and limit spillages.
