Sepsis survivor tackles Three Peaks for charity

Teacher Lizzie Went, who lives in Ashtead, developed sepsis in 2022 after an elective c-section which led to a haemorrhage.

Following four weeks of intense pain, she attended maternity triage where, despite her protests, she was sent home with a suspected urine infection.

Lizzie said: “That night was the scariest of my life - I deteriorated rapidly and became incredibly unwell.

“I returned to hospital the next morning where I was finally given a blood test and it was found I had sepsis.

“I then spent the next year suffering with post-sepsis syndrome and PTSD.”

In the UK, five people lose their lives to sepsis every hour. It is a life-threatening condition which arises when the body's response to infection harms its own tissues and organs.

It affects 245,000 people in the UK annually, claiming 48,000 lives.
