Long-awaited Metro extension is on track with new contractor

The reopening of the Leamside line reconnecting Washington to the to the rail network and the Tyne and Wear Metro line has moved a step closer after the appointment of a new contractor.

As well as being used by the Tyne & Wear Metro network, the reopening of the line would enable Washington to reconnect with the wider rail network.

In June this year North East mayor Kim McGuinness announced a funding deal with the Government including £9oomillion to extend the Metro line to include Washington.
