It would be amiss of us not to join the nation at large in congratulating the senior national men's football team, Bafana Bafana, for qualifying for the Fifa World Cup after more than 23 years of trying.

Bafana last went to the World Cup via qualification in 2002, when Japan and Korea hosted the finals, the first co-hosts in the history of the tournament, which is the world’s biggest sporting event by far.
South Africa participated in the 2010 World Cup as hosts, making history as the first and only nation on the continent thus far, to organise the tournament. Bafana went on to make a dubious and unwanted piece of history as the only host nation to fail to reach the second round of a World Cup.
When the draw for the qualifiers for the 2026 finals, which will be co-hosted by Mexico, the US and Canada, was announced about two years ago, there was little hope that SA would be counted among the 48 nations heading to North America for the kick-about.
