The coach and his team are obliterating all the records

- Kgomotso Mokoena

In his five years as Bafana coach, Hugo Broos has developed into some sort of an enigma. Those who like Broos adore him to bits, and those who loathe him detest him as if he has leprosy.

What seems to have worked in Broos’s favour is that he doesn’t give a toss what the supporters think of him; he is here to do his work and to achieve his mandate - something he has done with aplomb.

In fact, and truth be told, Broos has overachieved, despite his stubborn ways and approach.

His mandate was to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, but he went a notch higher and reached the knockout stage for the first time in the history of South African football. He might just stumble into the Last-16 with a doable assignment against Canada tonight in Los Angeles.

His millions of delusional critics, masquerading as Bafana supporters, instead of swallowing their pride and praising the ageing Belgian, are beating their chests and saying it was their militant approach on social media and their intervention that forced Broos’s hand to change the malfunctioning tactics he used against Mexico on the first day of the World Cup.
