Youth unemployment: a ticking time bomb

GIVEN the numerous challenges plaguing South Africa, President Cyril Ramaphosa’s planned national dialogue, announced on Tuesday, at face value appears to be a commendable initiative.

Set to cost a staggering R700 million, this initiative already bears the hallmarks of a talk shop, reminiscent of the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture, which, despite almost R1 billion spent and over 200 recommendations for prosecution, saw very few prosecutions.

As politicians prepare to crisscross the country for Youth Day rallies, to reminisce about the traumas of apartheid on June 16, 1976, today's youth know too well the everyday horrors under a democratic government.
