A pond, even created in a tub, opens up a world of plant possibilities, with waterlilies aquatic queens

Roll out the barrel and dip into pond life

When things start heating up, there's nothing like a bit of water to cool you down.

City and town planners in hot countries have long known the benefits of installing fountains to help combat heat stress. Water features also act as focal points for people to gather and simply enjoy the look and feel of water, its reflective qualities and movement.

It's estimated that over half of ponds have disappeared in Britain since the 1900s due to urbanisation and agriculture. They are an important part of the ecosystem and essential for wildlife so introducing one to your garden, however small, can be a valuable contribution.

I was recently asked for ideas on what to do with a half whiskey barrel in the garden. I initially thought about what small shrubs and trees would be suitable but it can also be used to make a miniature pond.
