MINISTERS removed the limit on how much landlords could charge in rent without doing any formal assessment of the policy's impact on residents.

Thousands of renters have seen their housing costs soar since April 1 with many fearing eviction and homelessness.

A freedom of information request revealed housing minister Paul McLennan did “no formal impact assessment” before removing rent controls last month.
