Law move on rape welcome

SCOTLAND'S most senior law officer has done the right thing by putting in place new safeguards to protect rape victims after a Sunday Mail campaign.

Lord Advocate Dorothy Bain KC will today announce the changes to a Crown Office policy that allows alleged rapists to be diverted from prosecution and given therapy and counselling instead.

Only senior Crown Office staff will now be able to authorise a diversion and victims will be better informed, with their feelings taken into account.

We first highlighted the issue in June 2023 when we revealed how two women who had reported attacks and were prepared to go to court were told the cases would not go ahead.
