Celebrating a leader who has transformed India’s destiny

In the last eleven years at the helm, Modi has emerged as a symbol of decisive leadership, visionary governance, and unwavering commitment to nation-building. His tenure has taken India into anew era, one of confidence, resilience, and aspiration, making his 75th birthday not just a personal milestone, but a national moment of reflection and pride.

A Governance Model Rooted in Delivery: The hallmark of Modi’s leadership lies in his ability to convert intent into impact. Where earlier schemes often remained confined to files and announcements, today they reach citizens directly, swiftly, transparently, and effectively. Technology-driven governance has ensured that benefits flow seamlessly to every corner of the country, cutting across class, region, and community. The Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana stands as a shining example. During the global pandemic, over 80 crore Indians were provided free food grains, a relief measure that continues to this day, embodying Modi’s philosophy of ensuring that no citizen goes hungry. Similarly, the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana has helped over 4 crore families secure a roof over their heads, turning the dream of home ownership into reality for millions. The Ujjwala Yojana has empowered over 9 crore women with free LPG connections, liberating them from hazardous smoke-filled kitchens and improving their quality of life. Health, too, has been redefined through Ayushman Bharat, which provides free medical coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh annually to more than 5 crore families, a historic step that has freed countless households from the financial ruin of medical emergencies.

The Seelawathi Syndrome

With a title reminiscent of Simone de Beauvoir’s Brigitte Bardot and the Lolita Syndrome this most recent collection of short stories by Chandrarathna Bandara contains seven narratives which contain a sense of impending doom and loss, balanced with an ounce of hope. Simone de Beauvoir’s work was a scathing critique of the femininity and the essence of womanhood which was thought to be promoted at a time in France and indeed the western world when Brigitte Bardot was the ideal women were thought to aspire to. As a feminist de Beauvoir skillfully appropriated the title of Nabakov’s novel Lolita to drive home the point of her damning critique. Though the title is reminiscent of this wellknown feminist work, it is only a coincidence and Bandara’s collection deals with the broader notions of aging, youth, mortality, sexuality, societal norms, as relevant to class and gender as well as broader notions of ethics of war and the brutal truth behind our notions of nationalism. In conversation with him he reveals the reason behind the choice of title.
