Meet the pawsome five finalists shortlisted for The Kennel Club Hero Dog Award at this year's Crufts (and don't forget to vote for your favourite)
FIVE COURAGEOUS canines are competing to win the title of hero dog of the year. The brave hounds have been announced as finalists for the Royal Kennel Club Hero Dog Award ahead of the start of Crufts this Thursday.
From life-changing support dogs and devoted companions to crime-solving canines, this year's competitors have all made an extraordinary difference in the lives of the people around them.
They have been selected by the Royal Kennel Club from more than 100 entries as finalists for the award, which celebrates the unique relationships people have with their dogs, and the important role man's best friend plays in our lives and in society.
The winner, decided by a public vote, will receive £5,000 from the Royal Kennel Club Charitable Trust for the canine charity of their choice. They will be announced at the Birmingham NEC and on Channel 4 on the final day of Crufts next Sunday.
BEST FRIENDS Joey & Ciara
REMAINING by her side through grief and recovery, working cocker spaniel Joey is owner Ciara Mason's best friend.
His big brown eyes that shine through the soft, red hair that drapes his ears have been a constant source of strength and motivation for Ciara during the most challenging moments in her life.
Following the sudden loss of her 14-year-old sister, Ciara was left coping with delayed grief, PTSD and deep depression.
She was then forced to give up horse riding and her career when she was left unable to walk after being thrown off her horse. The 38-year-old airport manager felt completely lost, but since Joey came into her life she has regained confidence and a sense of purpose.
Ciara says: "I was quite a broken person, I just didn't realise it. Joey didn't save me from one big moment — it was every single day he just kept me going."
