Lily's legacy demands we redouble our efforts

THIS year Holocaust Memorial Day carries profound significance. It marks 80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and the world's first glimpse into the scale and horror of the what took place.

One of Europe's most infamous killing sites, it was a central mechanism of the Nazis' "Final Solution".

There, approximately one million Jewish men, women and children were systematically murdered - families and communities wiped from existence.

As we reflect on this solemn anniversary, we stand at a pivotal moment. This might be the last milestone anniversary where a significant number of Holocaust survivors will be able to play a role in the commemorations.

We are among the last generations to hear directly from those who endured the unendurable and have since dedicated their lives to educating others. Their testimonies have shaped our understanding of this darkest chapter in human history and underscored the consequences of unchecked prejudice, racism and antisemitism.
