WORLD CUP WIN FOR LIONESSES
THE LIONESSES roared their way to victory in the first match of the World Cup.
Georgia Stanway held her nerve to score a retaken penalty yesterday to clinch the win.
The attacking midfielder had her first penalty saved in the match in Brisbane, after a handball by Haiti's Batcheba Louis.
Fans were left on the edge of their seats until the video referee ruled the Haitian goalkeeper had moved off her line.
Undeterred by the drama, the Cumbrian-born Stanway, 24, kept her composure to find the back of the net.
The Lionesses kept a clean sheet with goalkeeper Mary Earps making a crucial save late on to retain their 1-0 lead and keep alive their dreams of building on their 2022 Euro win.
