STRUGGLING rail operator CrossCountry has breached its performance targets repeatedly, despite cutting services late last year as part of a recovery plan.

CrossCountry's cancel culture

The former Transport Secretary, Louise Haigh, approved proposals by the operator to run a reduced timetable from August to November after its performance was labelled "dire".

Yet cancellations rose 15 per cent on average since the end of that remedial plan, analysis of data from the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) reveals.

CrossCountry implemented a series of performance indicators following November, to include a maximum of 420 cancellations per month to avoid breaching strict commitments. It outlined the objectives in an internal document but comparisons with ORR data suggest it breached those performance indicators in four of the last five months.

Our children must get to ‘breathe in the countryside’

THE 1960s and 70s saw an awakening of understanding about the fragility of the planet and our burgeoning urbanisation, our exploitation and erosion of the natural world around us, and our growing alienation from the countryside, farming and wildlife.
