Councils told to end plague of potholes

MOTORISTS plagued by potholes have a right to expect better and councils should do repairs immediately, Esther McVey has said.

Urging councils to take action so recent cold weather is not allowed to worsen the state of the nation’s roads, the Cabinet Office minister added: “The money is there – now let’s get Tarmacking!”

Last week, motoring organisation the RAC reported that it was called out to nearly 30,000 pothole-related breakdowns in 2023 –   up by a third on the previous year.

And it estimates there are around “six potholes per mile on council-controlled roads in England and Wales”.

The Pothole Partnership claims that last year the cost of damage caused by these dreaded dips in the road came to £474million.
